Join the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad for a series of authentic photo events in Spring 2017 at the Cass Scenic Railroad. This inaugural photo charter series will feature the first-ever private photo charter on the former Chesapeake & Ohio line connecting Cass with Durbin.
The plan is to create a scenario that transports us back to 1952. The Mower Lbr Co is still operating and C&O permits Mower crews track time on the still active Greenbrier Subdivision. We will perform switching moves much like may have occurred during this era with equipment matched as closely as possible to the times. To accomplish this, cars and locomotives will be “staged” at various locations to recreate “a day in the life” type of experience. Period-dressed ticket holders will be provided the opportunity to become participants.
Once our morning excursion wraps up on the C&O Durbin line, we will make a run for Cass Hill for a series of photo runbys and static displays near Leatherbark, at the lower and upper switchbacks, and local switching activity at Whittaker. This interactive Saturday afternoon event will provide opportunities to see different freight consists and switching. If you decide to dress up in period clothing, you can be a part of the operational experience for posed photographs in different scenes throughout the day.
A tour of the shops at Cass, will round out day one. Day two takes us to Durbin for first-ever scenes of Heisler #6 facing south and pulling another train of vintage freight cars.
This two-day photo event not only provides photographers the unprecedented experience to ride the rails of the former Greenbrier line, but it also provides them the opportunity to see the Cass Scenic from a freight-operational perspective like no other. The new photo series is part of a historical series being debuted by the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad to showcase the restoration efforts of the railroad’s personnel and to embrace the preservation of West Virginia’s railway history.
